DECATUR – Today The City of Decatur, Greater Decatur Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Corporation and Akorn Inc. will announce the construction of a 30,000 Square Foot expansion to Akorn’s existing packaging facility on Decatur’s West Side. This is a $5.6 Million project and was in competition with existing Akorn facilities in the State of New York. The facility will retain all 200 jobs and is expected to create 25 new positions. We believe this project win is a testament to Akorn’s current workforce and leadership.
Akorn is a specialty generic pharmaceutical company engaged in the development, manufacture and marketing of multi-source and branded pharmaceutical products with a worldwide manufacturing footprint. In addition to use in local hospitals and physicians’ offices, products manufactured and packaged at Akorn’s two Decatur facilities are used across the United States to help patients in need of quality, affordable pharmaceutical products.
“Akorn’s two facilities in Decatur have been key to our growth and continued success in the sterile injectable industry for over two decades,” said Steve Lichter, Akorn’s Executive Vice President, Pharmaceutical Operations. “We take great pride in our operations in Decatur and this expansion will allow us to continue to efficiently serve our patient-customers in need of quality pharmaceutical products.”
“This project marks another big win for a Decatur company. We believe this win is a testament to Akorn’s current workforce and leadership. It not only keeps skilled positions in Decatur, but it also showcases our ability to manufacture even more products.” said Mayor Julie Moore Wolfe, City of Decatur.
“We’re happy to see Akorn continue to grow and succeed in Illinois as an important member of our state’s life sciences and pharmaceutical industry,” Illinois Department of Commerce Director Jim Schultz said. “With this expansion, Akorn will continue to build their footprint in Illinois, benefiting from Decatur’s highly skilled workforce and manufacturing expertise.”
